After a month of filming in and around Aspen, including a three-day takeover of the historic Hotel Jerome last week, the feature film “Cougar Hunting” is calling it a wrap this week.
“We appear to be finishing on schedule or slightly ahead of schedule,” said executive producer Andrew Cader, who lives part-time in a condo at Top of Mill and helped finance the $3.5 to $4 million comedy.
Cader, a retired Wall Street executive and self-proclaimed movie industry neophyte who owns a piece of the Tampa Bay Rays and makes a cameo in the film, says he will donate 10 percent of any profits from “Cougar Hunting” to Aspen-based charities.
He helped get the picture made with his friend Robin Blazak, a first-time director who also wrote, produced and acts in the movie.
By all accounts, “Cougar Hunting” is a raunchy sex comedy about three kids who come to Aspen in the winter hoping to partake in this mountain town’s bounty of wealthy, tarty women of a certain age — a descendent of classic low-brow flicks like “Porky’s” and “American Pie.”
The filmmakers are gambling that they’re tapping into today’s cougar zeitgeist and hoping it can match the success of its bawdy forbears.
“It seems like the cougar topic is getting a little more mainstream at this moment,” Cader said. “That’s random but fortunate for us. There’s a television show [TV Land’s reality dating program “The Cougar”] and a lot of buzz about cougars but nobody’s made a movie yet … This is all adult nonsense and the script is very funny. If the final product is good, and I hope it is, it will be a theater-quality movie.”
